Week 6

This week's assignment was to find various details and elements of a design style to inform our upcoming packaging project. The design style I am assigned is the Victorian style, and my packaging project is to recreate Dove candy bars in milk chocolate, dark chocolate and toasted almond milk chocolate.

Victorian style encompasses these traits:

"The Victorian Era, as a whole, is characterized by a romanticism in all areas of the arts. Visual arts, music and literature all showed a strong concern filled with emotion. Victorian designs are typically highly ornamental. Fleural and other natural designs were extremely prevalent. Rooms often mixed several complimentary prints in wallpapers and fabriques, but his became less common toward the end of the era. Pastel colours were used, however, they were often somewhat less saturated than those used in later periods." (Source is here).

The projects

I repackaged Dove Chocolate in three varieties: Roasted Almond Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate and Cranberry Almond Dark Chocolate. All were delicious.

Using pastel colors and a dove and "flowy curtain" motif, I am trying for a watercolory, soft look. While the dove and curtain are still in its infancy in terms of the design, I feel the overall layout is where I want it. I think what I will do next is use Photoshop to build more of the watercolory soft feel for the dove, curtain and maybe more of the background to overcome Illustrator's more graphic modern feel.

I used Edwardian script and Goudy Old Style for the fonts. Since modern font with sans serif looks were not used back then, I had to search for a readable serif font that would work well with small font sizes.

Week 5

Assignment

This week's assignment was to finish up the chosen design from week 4 to put in an art show for Lincoln's 200th birthday.

> Composition

Using Illustrator, I illustrated the jar and coins. I took the concept of using the cent sign a step further and added it to arrows to point to various coins in the jar. This provided movement and visual interest between the graphic and the time line. I simplified the label of the jar to look like a stylized penny and tie the concept together.

> Concept

I fleshed out the idea of using one graphic to tie my time line together, with the pennies towards the bottom of the jar representing current history and the pennies towards the top representing the beginning of the time line.

Week 4

This week's assignment was create 3 variations of an information graphic pertaining to some specific detail about Abraham Lincoln's life.

Composition

I used Adobe Illustrator for the penny loafer illustration and stock photography where applicable. I had two major ideas, and worked on two variations of each. The first idea dealt with a penny loafer type of image and I modeled the time line along the contours of the shoe. The second idea was to point out different pennies in a coin jar and contour the information along the image. The challenge was to keep the readability, simplicity yet attention grabbing aspect to the design so the information wouldn't get cluttered.

> Concept

My idea was to create an information graphic about the history of the penny. It turns out there was more information about the penny than I ever knew existed, and it was a bit of a challenge distilling all the information down into a coherent document.









The penny jar layout with the jar to the side was the one picked to flesh out into a more complete concept for Week 5. At the end of class on Week 4, this is the layout I had come up with so far, incorporating subheads into the text bullets and using the cents sign as a type of arrowhead to link text and image.
